J. W. Wilbarger, a pioneer who came to Texas over half a century before writing this book, was the last surviving brother of three who served the state in its early struggles. His brother, Josiah Wilbarger, famously survived being scalped by Indians near the present-day location of the Texas Capitol. Spending the prime of his life among the early settlers, J. W. Wilbarger felt compelled to preserve the history of the conflicts and hardships they faced for future generations. He carefully gathered firsthand accounts from reliable sources over the course of twenty years to compile this volume, ensuring the accuracy and authenticity of the stories within.
