Vanessa Lafaye was born in Tallahassee, Florida in 1963. She received a BsC degree in zoology from Duke University. She moved to the United Kingdom in 1987. From 1989 to 1999, she worked as a commissioning editor at Oxford University Press. Her novels included Summertime and At First Light. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 and detailed the impact of living with cancer in her blog Living While Dying. She died from cancer on February 28, 2018 at the age of 54.
