Rangoo madam, this is really very touchy. I feel empathetic. It seems that you were deeply moved but Nature has its own ways to play its own roles. You did your best to save the tiny bird but birth and death are not in our hands. As you wrote the bird might have eaten the ants in its previous birth and that's why it has come on the earth just to pay its debt !!! We may console ourselves by chanting a line from the Geeta, "Jaatasya hi dhruvo mrityu"...(One who has taken birth has to dir surely.)

I know its very sad....but beautiful presentation ...which ultimately leads to deep down sorrow of lifecycle...and yes karma...len den... there must be something to be taken..like yr care.. emotions...etc from you...so it might have landed in yr home and yr hand too..you tried yr best ..but ultimate is... ultimate...
