About this ebook

One thousand Japanese high school students are suddenly thrust into an unfamiliar world rife with dangerous monsters. Their survival becomes dependent on those who awaken to unexplainable powers. Majima Takahiro, a normal second-year student, does not get any such power. Instead, he joins the majority of students building the homestead. But when a group of empowered students revolt, Takahiro is left wandering the forest on the verge of death. Having lost all faith in humanity, he finds salvation from an unlikely source: monsters!

The first half of the book tells an interesting story but the writing style soon turns to an awkward and stilted form filled with constant dumps of exposition. Character A: Thinks very profound thoughts for a few pages, "I will now tell you about my profound thought." Character B: "That is a very interesting profound thought. Let me tell you about my profound thought." Character C: "I also have a profound thought that I need to share with you." Character A: "My whole outlook on life has been changed by your profound thoughts. I now have some new profound thoughts to describe over the next few pages." It became quite tiresome to read the second half. I am going to give the 2nd book a chance in the hopes that this was just a difficult set of scenes for the writer to convey and not a sign of their long term writing style.

Pacing is slow and writing/translation is awkward at times, but the character development is so well done. Honestly while isekai is all fun and games to read, I think this story does a much better job to paint a real image of what it would really be like to get thrust into a world without any understanding or help. Be prepared for a lot of introspection on the MCs state of mind. The story does pick its pace up in future volumes as he comes to better terms with what is happening. Well worth giving this series a chance as a whole.

I started with the manga but as I finished what was available, I went looking for the light novel. I am not disappointed. Sure I'm playing catch up with the manga but I have to say this light novel doesn't make it painful. In fact I'm actually enjoying it. Can't wait for the next volume!
