Es war lange nach Mitternacht und im Hotel war es still wie auf einem Friedhof. Die Gäste schliefen. Nur im Foyer brannte Licht. Benson, der Nachtportier, blätterte in einem Katalog mit vielen Abbildungen. Er mochte Bilder von schönen Frauen in Unterwäsche. Plötzlich hörte Benson ein Geräusch im Haus. Er lauschte angespannt. Oben auf der Galerie tappten Schritte. "Hallo? Ist dort jemand?", rief er. Als keine Antwort kam, nahm er einen Kerzenständer und stieg die Treppe hinauf. Er betrat den Flur, von dem die Zimmer abgingen. Benson erschrak, als eine Gestalt in den Lichtschein der Kerze trat: der blinde Buck Lewis von Zimmer neun. Der Mann hatte offenbar die Orientierung verloren. "Kann ich Ihnen helfen, Sir?", fragte Benson. "Wage es nicht, mich anzufassen!", knurrte der Blinde.
