Everything changed the day she died...

Ever since a car accident nearly ended her life, Serena Quinn has been plagued by visions she can’t control. To cope with the fear of having them take over her life, she withdraws completely, isolating herself from society. But when she’s attacked by an unknown enemy, the mysterious Silas draws her into a hidden world of villainous, scheming vampires.

Although Silas vows to protect her, Serena doesn’t know who she can trust. Even as she fights her attraction for Silas, Serena’s enemies become bolder, seeking to control her special powers. Will Serena’s connection to her guardian be enough to save her in the end?

What a superb new series from Christine Pope!! Great new take on Vampires and Gargoyles and all things that go bump in the night!!! Serena has had a lot to put up with in her short life. A disinterested family incl: aspiring politician of a brother, harpy of a mother, self obsessed sister and a father who just seems to fade into the background! After a car accident leaves her with visions she really only has one friend left, Candace. Thankfully her neighbours have adopted her and look out for her. But when something...different attacks her and she is saved by the mysterious Silas, she gets sucked into a world she never knew existed. And whilst she may treat Silas as a new friend, he has been watching for longer than she thinks! Lucius just makes your skin crawl and semivives are just....bleeeeeuuuuughh! Be warned this does end in a cliffhanger!!! Dammit now I need to know what happens next?

Christine Pope’s new series, The Watchers, is a real treat. The first book, Falling Dark, establishes the characters of Serena Quinn and Silas Drake. Serena is a member of a wealthy family in the Los Angeles area, all of whom seem to have carved out a role for themselves, including a senator brother who plans to run for president. Serena has never felt like she’s fit in with her family but, since her accident three years previously, she feels even more ostracized. She now sees visions, something her family cannot understand. But Serena’s visions have a habit of coming true, with sometimes devastating results. Serena has carved out a life for herself but one day all that changes. Walking home from Trader Joe’s she’s grabbed by a semivive, a slave of a vampire, that tries to kidnap her and her whole view of the world turns upside down. Enter Silas Drake. I suppose you could use the old cliché Tall, Dark and Handsome (not to mention Mysterious) and it wouldn’t be far off. Serena is fascinated by this man who saved her but she finds she almost has to pry any information out of him about himself. He obviously is hiding something, especially why he has been appointed as her body guard. Eventually she finds out why but the truth is far stranger than she expected. Falling Dark is a very good example of Christine Pope’s creativity and how she’s an excellent wordsmith. I highly recommend it.
