The DeepNIc application explores twenty points of interest on both sides of Nicosia’s buffer zone and shows how they have changed over time. It encourages the user to walk the Cypriot capital to explore these sites and find out, through the AR tool, how they looked in the past. Some of these sites look almost the same until today, others have been completely changed and a few of them no longer exist.
This application is part of a two -year research project funded by the Research and Innovation Foundation of the Republic of Cyprus (2022-2024) and it is called Deep mapping Nicosia’s urban centre, 1960-2020 (DeepNic)). The project aims to investigate the evolution and transformation of Nicosia’s urban centre from a historical and sociological perspective using several types of data such as written, oral, and visual. It takes the whole of the urban centre of Nicosia as a case study, to examine how its transformation within a certain period is affected by key political and social developments occurred from 1960 until today on three thematic areas: monument building, business activity, and demography.
All the findings of the project are available on a map-based platform on https://deepnic.cyens.org.cy/ which we encourage you to visit.
