Chipolo uses location data to display the last known location of your Chipolo tracking tag in the Chipolo app, to trigger Out of Range Alerts on your phone and to display your phone's location in the Chipolo web app, even when the app is running in the background. Additionally, Chipolo may use your location when scanning for nearby Chipolo tracking tags as part of the community search feature that helps our users find each other’s Chipolos.

I rarely rate apps, but this one is worth the warning. Over 15 years and 100s of apps, this is the worst. The tracking function doesn't work at all. And having the app always open in the background drains the battery surprisingly quickly.

I had to set notifications for this app to "not allowed", as it kept sending notifications every minute, saying it is running in the background. Uttermost annoying! Not sure it still works as it should be, after that. It seems to work unreliable, it only works occasionally. I really should look for a better solution.

The notification is unfortunately required to allow the foreground service part of our app to run. This allows the app to run as good as possible in the background. It's terrible on Android. There seems to be no way to set up safe areas, so if I leave my tracker in one room in my home and walk to another area, I get an alert asking me if I've left the tracker behind. Apparently, you can set up safe areas on the iPhone app (such as your home), but this seems ridiculously not included this feature on the Android app!

Our Out of Range Alerts take into consideration different factors, not just your location (which is inaccurate indoors and it doesn't update quickly enough when you get outside). This is the reason why the concept of safe areas isn't there. However, simply being on the Wi-Fi should solve your problems, as that would make the location safe in a way.
